چکیده

This paper endows the recently-proposed granular element method (GEM) with the ability to perform 3D discrete element calculations. By using non-uniform rational B-Splines to accurately represent complex grain geometries, we proposed an alternative approach to clustering-based and polyhedra-based discrete element methods whereby the need for complicated and ad hoc approaches to construct 3D grain geometries is entirely bypassed. We demonstrate the ability of GEM in capturing arbitrary-shaped 3D grains with great ease, flexibility, and without excessive geometric information. Furthermore, the applicability of GEM is enhanced by its tight integration with existing non-uniform rational B-Splines modeling tools and ability to provide a seamless transition from binary images of real grain shapes (e.g., from 3D X-ray CT) to modeling and discrete mechanics computations. A Study of the Wave Propagation Velocity in Granular Soils Using Discrete Element Method (DEM)

In the present paper, discrete element method (DEM) is used to study wave propagation phenomenon in granular soils. The effect of factors such as coefficient of friction, frequency, normal stiffness and soil gradation on the wave velocity is studied. Using the wall motion based on the sinusoidal function is the method of loading used in this simulation, through which the pressure wave is transf...

Micromorphic continuum stress measures calculated from three-dimensional ellipsoidal discrete element simulations on granular media

The objective of the paper is to demonstrate the calculation of micromorphic continuum stress measures based directly on three-dimensional (3D) ellipsoidal discrete element (DE) simulations over representative volume elements (RVE) within the DE domain representing granular media. We will demonstrate these calculations for two simulations: (1) pile penetration, and (2) cavity expansion. All cal...

Homogenization of granular material modeled by a three-dimensional Discrete Element Method

A homogenization strategy for granular materials is presented and applied to a three-dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM), that uses superellipsoids as particles. Macroscopic quantities are derived from the microscopic quantities resulting from a DEM simulation by averaging over representative volume elements (RVEs). The implementation of a RVE is described in detail regarding the definiti...

A new positive definite semi-discrete mixed finite element solution for parabolic equations

In this paper, a positive definite semi-discrete mixed finite element method was presented for two-dimensional parabolic equations. In the new positive definite systems, the gradient equation and flux equations were separated from their scalar unknown equations.  Also, the existence and uniqueness of the semi-discrete mixed finite element solutions were proven. Error estimates were also obtaine...

A nonlocal multiscale discrete-continuum model for predicting mechanical behavior of granular materials

A three-dimensional nonlocal multiscale discrete-continuum model has been developed for modeling mechanical behavior of granular materials. In the proposed multiscale scheme, we establish an informationpassing coupling between the discrete element method, which explicitly replicates granular motion of individual particles, and a finite element continuum model, which captures nonlocal overall re...
